Post Re: Introduction to Probability

Thanks again Lakota. Like netneanderthal I too am unsatisfied with my command of statistics. I came across this same book some time back while looking for resources to help me.

For those who are willing to work their way through it (something I myself have not yet accomplished) the following will most likely be helpful. It is the answers for the odd numbered practice questions found in the book.

Hi Kabinetmaker,

Thank you for the share but is this material copyrighted? If that is the case, I am not if sure we should share this on this forum.

Good question. The material is posted as a "free download" on the website of Dartmouth college, where Dr. Snell was on the faculty when the book was written.

The Dartmouth website (dartmouth.edu) describes the book as "available for download here in pdf format. We are pleased that this has made our book more widely available." and "We are pleased to announce that our book has now been made freely redistributable under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License (FDL), as published by the Free Software Foundation. Briefly stated, the FDL permits you to do whatever you like with a work, as long as you don't prevent anyone else from doing what they like with it."

I would not have posted it if I knew of any copyright issues. I did not post a link directly to the Dartmouth website. I apologize for any unintended breach of etiquette.

And I also should have thanked the good people at Dartmouth for making it available in the first place. Mea culpa.

Thanks for he vote of confidence. I hope I didn't seem irritated, I was just tired at the end of a long day.

For anyone who is interested there are some other excellent resources available out there. Some time ago MIT started what they call the "open courseware" movement. They take the textbooks and instructional materials from some of their selected classes (in several subjects) and make them available to anyone who wants it over the internet. Several other institutions have also joined in doing this.

Not every class or subject is available. And you can not get any college credits (not even audits) or instructor assistance for studying this material. What you can get is free access to world-class material. For a person who is interested in learning and has the time and ability it's a good opportunity. But I suspect the truth is that most people are going to do much better in a traditional learning environment with much more structure and support. ("Know Thyself" - inscribed in the temple of the oracle of Delphi in ancient Greece)

Anyone who who is interested can simply Google "open courseware".
