Default BPR

Hi all,

I am new to BPR and Six Sigma. What methodology from Six Sigma can be used in BPR process?

Default Re: BPR

I've had little to do with BPR as here in the UK it got itself a very bad name and was seen as a euphemism for redundancy and downsizing.

However, BPR as I understand it is all about improving efficiency and effectiveness within an organisation.

There are many tools within the six sigma tool kit that can aid this. For example, flowcharting can help identify bottlenecks.

I don't believe that we ought to "pigeon hole" the tools; I advocate using what's there in order to achieve the desired outcome. To that end, I think of Six sigma as the DMAIC methodology, and adopt tools from where ever, no matter what the official title is.

I beleive, after reading from another thread, that it is Business Process Re-engineering. Other than that, I am at a loss.

Unfortunately that was the way it became seen. I remember Rover Group getting involved in it, then backing away very quickly when they realised the adverse effect it was having.

Like so many things, it looks good on paper, but it's how it's interpreted that upsets the apple cart. My PhD director of studies swears by it! - Maybe that's why we have heated discussions?

Sparky,

All who know you understand you can be passionate about your beliefs. What is of news to me is that you are continuing your PhD journey -- this is the first news on that topic I can recall in sometime. Good for you!

Blessings,
Lakota

Daniel and Haz,

BPR essentially is Business process Re engineering or as we say in our organization, "Business Design or Redesign". So, If you think process needs to be re established or re defined and there could be nothing more you can do with Current processes or standards and you want to create a new process or merge two or more processes within your Organization or if you want to migrate your process to some third party, you will use it.

The Methodology you use while Redesigning is DMADV and the ideal tool is FMEA. I believe there would not be any process on the planet where in if you are applying DMADV methodology and you won't be using FMEA. Nonetheless, you may use some different tools along with FMEA too.

There is also a possibility that you may use FMEA several times while doing this kind of project or process improvement initiative.

Regards

Jai

It's early days yet. However, there are still a few obstacles to be overcome. I've also grown a lot over the last few years; I'm not totally certain that this is the right route any-more.
